This week I interpreted at the award ceremony of the Frank-Schirrmacher-Foundation. What an honor and a pleasure to meet Alice Schwarzer and Ayaan Hirsi Ali!

Chopin’s Men

I received the assignment to adapt and translate the two-hour radio feature on Chopin into English from Swiss Public Radio’s Arts Channel SRF.

In his program “Passage” cultural editor Moritz Weber reveals that Chopin’s homosexuality has been kept under wraps for reasons of propriety. Passages in letters to his male lovers were tampered with and his life story was re-written. The radio program was taken up by the international press so that SRF decided to reproduce the program in English – a first since 20 years.

SRF asked me to produce the English language version of the program and to take on the speaker’s part in the audio.

The English adaptation was challenging. All existing English versions of Chopin’s letters contained mistranslated passages, which had to be brought in line with the newly commissioned German translation of the letters. But the tone of the language needed to be consistent with the general tone of the letters. Translating the speaker’s text was far easier – all the more, since I could write it for myself as the speaker.
